Description
Note: the base personal use pack including assets, and a commercial licence add-on, are both available to add to your cart on this product’s page. See “Choose a product type” to the right of the pack cover art.
The Underdark City Pack is inspired by my Underdark Cities Maps and Theme Pack, which is great for making a city overview map or a hex crawl map. In contrast, this pack enables you to make a map that individual party members can get lost in. This pack contains two sub-packs for use in Dungeondraft and Wonderdraft.
The Dungeondraft sub-pack contains:
- 147 “building” objects (floor to ceiling cave structures which humanoids live in)
- NEW! 6 “dwelling” objects, including a stone dome with brilliant quartz variant (designed to be inside of caves vs. floor to ceiling structures)
- 20 rock terrain patterns (also provided as terrain); NEW! additional terrain pattern in black, green, and rust variants
- 2 tile overlay patterns, so you can add grid tiles to almost any terrain.
- NEW! 2 rock walls (also provided as paths); wall variant 2 has built-in shadowed walls
- NEW! 3 cave brushes in standard and colorable variants
- 2 sample city objects at different scales to help you get started and make a city quickly.
- Underdark Cave Village Map, 256ppi
All of the building objects have gradient shadowed borders – you can make a whole map without manual shadowing!
The Wonderdraft sub-pack contains the building and dwelling objects, 9 colorable mushroom “trees”, 1 water texture (water is the Underdark walls), 1 grey floor texture, and a matching theme. The PNG files can also be uploaded to Roll20 or other compatible VTTs.
Please read my Licence Agreement. This pack is licensed for personal use, unless you have also purchased the commercial licence available on this product page.
How to use the Dungeondraft pack?
The assets in this pack are designed for city scale maps that cover a wide area without needing 60-100-200 tiles, including highlighted points of interest that can be cues for detailed encounter maps. Depending on your virtual tabletop, you can still have individual character tokens running about and getting into trouble. Maps made with this asset pack allow characters to explore and find interesting places.
The secret to this pack is that you’re making a map with all the normal objects half or quarter scale. The scale of decorations depends on the scale of your building objects (default scale covers half map tile, double scale covers quarter map tile). Many good quality assets work well with this configuration, and you may forget that you’re supposed to be creating a relatively simple map and not a high-definition encounter map! Natural terrains work really well. This pack includes 1 tiled terrain from my Rock Terrain Pack 1, scaled down appropriately.
A picture is worth one-thousand words. The map below was made using the double scale sample city object, featuring building assets from this pack, terrain assets from my Rock Terrain 1 pack, decorative assets (0.25 scale) by Forgotten Adventures, and extra light and shadow assets by Krager. The source map is 15×15 tiles, 256ppi, and is only a 2.9mb webp file – it covers an area equivalent to a 60×60 tile map. The CartographyAssets site restricts images exceeding 2500px, so this example is a scaled down version of the map. Following this example is a screen capture of what it looks like in Foundry VTT.
Screen capture from Foundry VTT, grid size set to 64px (a screen cap does not do this scene justice). Adjusting Foundry VTT grid size and background image scale can really optimize map area, quality and file size.
Pro tip: Dungeondraft objects can be set to block light, which then export as walls in UVTT files. Export your object walls before you add light sources to your map, because objects have occlusion areas that can mess with proper lighting and shadows. Disable block light after export and then add details and lights to your map before exporting the final webp file. Or alternatively, simply add transparent walls that will be exported as per normal.
The Dungeondraft pack plays well with terrains in the Rock Terrain pack series that includes – Rock Terrain Pack 1-3, Water on the Rocks Pack, Wastelands Pack, Colorful Caves Pack, Horror Terrain Pack, Bloody Bones Terrain Pack.
